Mao Zedong attached great importance to the efforts in Xizang. He gave many important instructions and discourses on the peaceful liberation, democratic reform and political, economic and cultural aspects of Xizang, and left behind a large number of manuscripts. The Selected Works of Mao Zedong on Xizang contains 101 telegrams, letters, talks and instructions on Xizang work from 1949 to 1961. These manuscripts record a series of major decisions and important instructions of Mao Zedong and the Party Central Committee on Xizang work during this period, and they are of great documentary value for studying Mao Zedong's thought on Xizang work and the Party's policies on Xizang work.
The Selected Works of Mao Zedong on Xizang is rich in content and particularly incisive as it covers many aspects of the march into Xizang, the peaceful liberation of Xizang, the preservation of the implementation of agreements and the quelling of the Tibetan rebellion, and the democratic reforms. The guidelines in the writings, which range from a comprehensive approach to governance and major decisions to subtle suggestions and propositions, are all linked to Mao's grand strategic thinking and reflect, in a concrete and comprehensive manner, his conception, layout, views and methods for solving the Xizang issue. At the same time, these selected works reflect the struggle of the Xizang people under the guidance and leadership of the Party to strengthen national unity, oppose separatism, safeguard the unity of the motherland and strive to build a new Xizang, and truly record the process of economic and social development in the Xizang region after the founding of New China.
The Selected Works of Mao Zedong on Xizang is the first comprehensive and systematic collection of Mao Zedong's writings on Xizangan work, showing Mao's decisions and the Party's policy on Xizangan work, especially the correct understanding and handling of ethnic and religious issues, with informative historical materials. It is an integral part of Mao Zedong Thought, fills the gap in Mao Zedong's collected writings on ethnicity, and enriches the treasure house of Marxist theory of ethnicity.
