Opposing Han Chauvinism

One of the policies of the CPC to solve the domestic problems about nationalities.

This policy was discussed more systematically by Mao Zedong in the "On Ten Major Relationships" in April 1956 and "On the Correct Handling of Contradictions Among the People" in February 1957, and by Zhou Enlai in his speech at the Symposium on Nationalities Work convened by the Nationalities Committee of the National People's Congress on August 4, 1957.

Han chauvinism referred to here is mainly manifested in the following ways: treating ethnic groups with an unequal attitude, ignoring their equal rights; being arbitrary in relations with ethnic cadres, taking over or imposing and ordering; neglecting minority work, not caring for the needs of ethnic groups; ignoring the needs of ethnic groups; ignoring the characteristics of ethnic groups and their right to autonomy, and not respecting the needs of minority groups, ignoring their characteristics and rights to autonomy, not respecting their languages, writing and customs, and making ethnic regions follow the rules of Han Chinese regions. If this kind of Han chauvinism continued to develop, it would damage national unity. Therefore, it is necessary to oppose Han chauvinism and maintain and strengthen national unity.

Han chauvinism was the reflection of the ideology of the landlord class and bourgeoisie among the Han Chinese on the national question. The policy of oppression and discrimination against ethnic minorities pursued by the KMT government was typical of the Han chauvinism. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the system of oppression of nationalities was abolished.
