Philadelphia Conference of Delegates of the First International in 1876

As the workers' movement in some European countries was developing in greater depth day by day, the ties between the General Council of the First International and the European branches became looser and looser after its relocation to the United States, and the reactionary forces of European countries stepped up their repression of the International and the national branches. The General Council of the First International has fulfilled its historical mission and has lost its organizational role. In this situation, on the proposal of Marx, the General Council held its last conference of delegates in Philadelphia, United States of America, on July 15, 1876, with the attendance of 25 delegates. The conference of delegates adopted a resolution to dissolve the General Council, resolving to cease its activities until new conditions for the restoration of the International had been created. The conference finally adopted the declaration, To the Workingmen of All Countries, which concluded with the slogan “Proletarians of all countries, unite!”.
