Hong Kong’s Return to Motherland

The event of Hong Kong's return to the motherland that occurred on July 1, 1997. On September 26, 1984, the Chinese and British Governments initialed the “Joint Declaration of the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on the Question of Hong Kong” in Beijing, confirming that the Chinese Government would resume the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong on July 1, 1997. On December 19, 1984, the joint declaration was officially signed. On July 1, 1997, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the people's Republic of China was officially established.

The return of Hong Kong to motherland is of great historical and practical significance. It ended the 155 year long British colonial rule in Hong Kong, marked that the Chinese people abandoned the century old national humiliation of Hong Kong's occupation, and ushered in a new era of common development between Hong Kong and mainland China; it marked that the Chinese people have taken an important step on the path of accomplishing the great cause of the reunification of the motherland

It marked that the Chinese people have made new contributions to the cause of world peace, development and progress; and plays a leading and exemplary role in solving the Macao and Taiwan questions. As a successful practice of the concept of "One Country, Two Systems", the return of Hong Kong will forever shine in history.
