Organic Law of the Villagers Committees of the People’s Republic of China

In November 1987, the 23rd Session of the Standing Committee of the Sixth National People's Congress adopted the Organic Law of the Villagers' Committee of the People's Republic of China (Trial), and stipulated that it should be implemented on a trial basis from June 1, 1988.

In November 1998, the Fifth Session of the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress deliberated, adopted and formally promulgated the Organic Law of the Villagers' Committee of the People's Republic of China, which came into force on November 4, 1998, and was revised at the 17th Session of the Standing Committee of the Eleventh National People's Congress on October 28, 2010. The current Organic Law of the People's Republic of China on Villagers' Committees consists of 6 chapters and 41 articles in total, which specify the nature and organizational principles of the Villagers' Committees, the composition and duties of the Villagers' Committees, the election of the Villagers' Committees, the Villagers' Conferences and the Villagers' Representatives' Conferences and stipulations for democratic supervisions.

This is a law to guarantee the autonomy of the villagers in the countryside, let the villagers handle their own affairs according to law, develop democracy at the grass-roots level in the countryside, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the villagers, and promote the construction of a new socialist countryside.
