By 1956, most of the original main targets of the “First Five-Year Plan” was completed ahead of schedule. By the end of 1957, most of the targets of the “First Five-Year Plan” was substantially exceeded. During the five years, the central state's investment in capital construction in the sectors of economy, culture, education, and health reached a total of 49.3 billion yuan, exceeding the original plan by 15.3%, and with the addition of capital construction investments which were funded by enterprises and local governments the total investments for capital construction realized nationwide reached 58.8 billion yuan.

The construction of 921 industrial and mining construction projects above the limit, and by the end of 1957, 428 projects fully and 109 projects partially had been put into production. 49.2 billion yuan of new fixed assets were added, which is equivalent to 1.9 times the original value of fixed assets owned by the whole country in 1952. In 1957, China's total industrial output reached 783.9 billion yuan, exceeding the original plan by 21%, an increase of 128.3% over 1952, with an average annual growth of 18%. In 1957, the total agricultural output reached 60.4 billion yuan (calculated on the basis of 1952 prices). It completed 101% of the original plan, an increase of 25% over 1952 and an average annual increase of 4.5%. During the five years, prices remained basically stable throughout the country, and the state treasury broke even and had a slight surplus in all years except for 1956 when there was a deficit.

The living standards of the people also gradually improved. The national average consumption level reached 102 yuan in 1957, which is 1/3 higher than that of 76 yuan in 1952. The average consumption level of the staff and workers increased from 148 yuan to 205 yuan, 38.5% higher, and that of the peasants from 62 yuan to 79 yuan, 27.4% higher. The formulation and implementation of the “First Five-Year Plan” laid a strong material foundation for the smooth socialist transformation of China, as well as laid the preliminary foundation for the socialist industrialization of the country.
